SUMMARY OF THE DMV’S STEPS TO GET YOUR PERMIT AND LICENSE:

Three easy steps for anyone under 17½ years old to get a permit.

  1. You must be at least 15 1/2 years old.
  2. You must complete a Driver Education Program (In-class or Online) and obtain a Certificate of Completion of Driver Education (OL237 or DL 400B) or Certificate of Completion of Non-Classroom Driver Education (DL 400C).
  3. You will need to enroll in a 6-hour Driver Training program either before or after going to the DMV. Do not drive until you have had your first lesson with a driving instructor. Your permit is not valid until you take your first driver training lesson and the licensed driving instructor signs your permit. If you get pulled over for a traffic stop or get into a collision and your permit has not been signed by a licensed driving instructor, you may have your permit taken away and you will not be able to get your license until you turn 18 years old.

Note: You are required to schedule an appointment with the DMV in order to take your permit test. To make an appointment, you can call: 1-800-777-0133 or click here to schedule an appointment on the DMV website:

Don’t forget to print your record of your appointment confirmation!

NOTE: If you are unable to get your Permit, call our office immediately to request an extension to your contract expiration date.

List of documents needed when applying for your permit:

  • DMV Application for your permit and Driver’s License (DL 44). If both parents or guardians have custody, then both parents will have to sign it. If not, only the parent/guardian who has custody will have to sign it.
  • Certificate of Completion of Driver’s Education (OL237 or DL 400B) or Certificate of Completion of Non-Classroom Driver’s Education (DL 400C)
  • Your birth certificate or passport (original or certified copy).
  • You must pay the DMV a $35.00 Fee which covers both the Permit and Drive test. You must then pass the multiple choice exam (46 questions in which you can miss a maximum of 8 questions and still pass). Your Permit is good for 1 year from the application date, not from when you pass your test after an initial first failed attempt. You are required to have your permit signed but it is valid from one year from the application date, not from when our instructor signs it.
  • Show 2 forms of documentation showing proof of residence which can be in the parents name if their same name is on the birth certificate which provides proof of the parental relationship.

NOTE: The Provisional Permit IS NOT valid for you to use until you take your first driving lesson with a licensed instructor.
