Online Driver Education

Our California DMV licensed program will allow a student to fulfill their mandatory driver education requirements. The student will be required to spend a total of 30 hours on this course before taking the final exam. The course can be accessed at any time and can be taken at the student’s own pace. There are no time limits to complete the course. The quizzes and final can be taken as many times as necessary in order to complete the course.

The course is divided into 11 units with a quiz at the end of each unit. The student will have to answer 80% of the questions correctly on each quiz in order to move on to the next unit. Once a student has completed the units, there is a 30 question final exam requiring a score of 80% to pass.

Once the student has passed the final, a Certificate of Completion will be mailed to the address provided. If you would like to pick this certificate up, then please call us immediately after completing the course so that we can hold it for you at our Manhattan Beach office.

2 Hour Freeway Intensive

Our highly trained instructors will help the student develop the necessary skills to drive safely on the freeway. The lesson will include, but is not limited to the following: entering/exiting, merging, lane changing and scanning to ensure safe and deliberate decisions are made.

***Freeway driving is left to the discretion of the driving instructor. The instructor will assess the student’s ability to determine if the student is driving safely enough to be taken on the freeway. When scheduling freeway lessons, it is strongly recommended that the lesson is taken on the weekend.

(This 2 hour session is dedicated solely to freeway driving including but not limited to speed control , steering control , repeated
merging on and off ramps, freeway transitioning, space cushioning, lane changes and navigating through heavy traffic.)

Driver Education In Classroom

The In-Class Driver Education course is offered in the classroom at our office in Manhattan Beach. We teach California DMV laws, rules and regulations. The course is taught by a licensed driver education instructor that encourages and promotes classroom dialogue. This ensures that students are highly engaged and attentive. Additionally, we offer lectures, videos, demonstrations and guest speakers. Our curriculum is extensive, detailed and entertaining.

We offer 4 separate units that do not need to be taken consecutively, however each unit will need to be taken to complete the course.

*There is a minimum requirement to have at least 5 students to be enrolled in the In-Class Driver Education Course. If at least 5 students are not enrolled then the scheduled class can be cancelled and rescheduled for a later time.

2 Hour Driving Lesson

During a two hour driver training lesson we teach how to drive legally and safely according to DMV standards in preparation for the drive test. We cover defensive driving and driver’s responsibility to ensure that the student is following the rules of the road. We prepare students to have the ability and skills needed to take preventative action to avoid a collision with other drivers.

Our vehicles are equipped with an accelerator and a brake pedal on the passenger side for better control and safety of the student and instructors.

Some of the skills we focus on are as follows;

  • The controls of the vehicle
  • How to use the steering wheel to make controlled turns
  • How to make a right / left turn
  • How much or how far to turn the steering wheel
  • How and when to softly apply the brakes or the gas pedal
  • How to drive in light / heavy traffic*
  • How to switch lanes
  • How to read/ understand traffic lights
  • How to read/ understand arrow traffic lights
  • How to park next to a curb, in a parking lot and parallel parking *
  • How to make a u-turn and three-point turn *
  • How to reverse a vehicle *
  • How to drive on freeways **

Our driving lessons are a one on one with the instructor. The lessons are back to back, which means that there may be another student in the car during pick up and/or drop off only.  During this time, the other student can continue learning through observation. If you prefer not to have your lesson on a back to back basis, you can make this request when scheduling. There is an additional fee for a non-back to back lesson.

Additional driver training lessons can be purchased to work on specific skills such as:
– Preparation for DMV test to ensure that the student is driving according to DMV standards.
– Improve defensive driving skills
– Parallel parking/Parking lot driving
– Freeway driving
– Defensive driving

Drive Test Service

A driving instructor will pick up the student one hour prior to the time of the DMV appointment and provide last minute instruction by giving valuable tips on how to drive legally and safely to pass the test. The student will then take the test using our vehicle. After completion of the test, the instructor will return the student to their home or school.

We will schedule the DMV drive test appointment for the student. If you schedule the appointment, please call us to make arrangements 2-3 weeks before your scheduled appointment so we can make the necessary arrangements.

We will guide and train the student on what needs to be done to pass, but it is up to the student to pass the test. If the student does not pass the test, there will be no refund.

We only provide this service at the following DMV’s: Hawthorne, Torrance, Inglewood, Culver City, Compton or San Pedro. For other DMV’s there is a non-refundable charge of $60/hour.

Driver Education Tutoring (8 Hours)

This is ideal for a student who took an online course and still needs a little help but has a schedule which permits them from attending the In-Class Driver ED course. We offer a tutoring session that lasts between 4 to 8 hours, or as much time as needed. During this tutoring session we discuss rules of the road, show informative videos and provide quizzes. We then review the quizzes afterward to ensure that the student has a solid grasp on the material. We can schedule these as one day sessions or spread them out over multiple days to accommodate your availability.

Behind the Wheel Driving School has designed an extensive skills course that addresses the leading causes of crashes. This course consists of several defensive driving skills that drivers need to focus on to reduce their involvement in collisions. Upon completion of course, students will receives a certificate of training which may allow for up to 20% discount on Vehicle Insurance.

In addition to making sure the student is driving legally and safely according to DMV standards, we will also teach them to drive defensively as well. Unfortunately, simply following the rules of the road is not enough to avoid collisions. With our very rushed and aggressive driving culture we need to drive defensively to stay safe.

This 2 hour session is dedicated solely to defensive driving practices that will help the new driver with critical driving decisions while navigating through heavy traffic and major streets. With a series of various

This is a 2 hour lesson in an SUV (Sports Utility Vehicle). SUV’s can be top heavy and require special instruction for speed control, steering control, judging distance, blind spots and limited visibility.
